Capra Granulosa Premium Bookbinding Leather

Introducing Capra Granulosa Premium Leather, a naturally grained vegetable-tanned goatskin developed for fine bookbinding and other demanding binding applications.

Capra Granulosa is produced from the same raw material as our esteemed Smooth Historical Goat (SHG). Its distinctive, naturally obtained grain is created through a specialized shrinking process during tanning, giving the leather its rich and pronounced character.

There are no artificial graining techniques, plating, or embossing used to create or conceal the grain. The natural character of the leather remains an essential part of its appearance.

Naturally Distinctive Grain

Capra Granulosa is produced using carefully controlled tanning and finishing processes designed to create a more distinct and pronounced grain. The same carefully selected chemicals from our Italian chemical house are used throughout production, while mechanical operations such as drying, toggling, and other tanning processes help develop the leather’s distinctive final character.

During tanning, Capra Granulosa undergoes a shrinking process that enhances the richness of its distinctive heavy grain. This process results in approximately a 25% reduction in surface area, increasing production costs while contributing to the leather’s pronounced natural texture and character.

The leather is drum-dyed and finished with a light cover coat. No pigment is used to cover grain defects. Its excellent water absorption qualities also make it particularly well suited for blind tooling, producing excellent results for bookbinders.

Recommended for Fine Bookbinding

We recommend Capra Granulosa for fine bindings. Only the highest-grade vegetable goatskin can be used to produce this type of leather, yet we continue to offer it at a highly competitive price.

Important Information About #2 Skins

#2 skins are not recommended for full bindings, as a defect may occur in the prime cutting area and may require cutting on both sides of the defect.

For this reason, #2 skins are generally more suitable for:

• Spines
• Quarter bindings
• Labels
• Other smaller leather components
