How sorting leather before it ships protects your schedule and your budget
You order leather for an edition of 1,000 books. You buy it by the square foot. The price looks fine, but then you reach copy 850 and the leather runs out.
The quoted footage counted ragged edges, thin flanks and stretchy areas, and none of those make good covers. So now production stops while you re-order and try to match color and grain to what is already on the bench.
We don’t think binders should carry that risk. Our edition clients bind in Capra Granulosa (CG) and Smooth Historical Goat (SHG), and we sort both before they ship. This article explains how that works and why it matters.
Gross footage is not usable footage
Most suppliers sell gross area. The hide goes through a scanner, a number is stamped on the back, and then it ships.
What happens next is your problem. Your staff lay out templates, work out offcuts and hope the totals add up.
Although the scanner measures the whole skin, each book uses only a part of it. A cover needs a clean area of the right size, and that area needs room for the turn-ins. It also has to sit the right way to the spine. Ragged edges and thin flanks can’t give you any of that.
So two hides with the same footage can give very different cover counts, and over a run of 1,000, that gap is large.
An example
Say a cover needs a piece of leather 40 cm by 28 cm, turn-ins included. One hide is compact and even, so it fits the template well. Another hide has the same footage, but a long, narrow outline and a thin flank, so it loses covers at the edges. The invoice calls the two hides equal, but they are not.
These numbers are for illustration only. Real yield depends on your dimensions and on each skin.
That is why we don’t stop at footage. We look at what each skin will actually give you, and we do it before the leather leaves our hands.
Capra Granulosa
Capra Granulosa is a premium goatskin with a very rich character, and it is a solid choice for edition binding. That richness is what your clients will notice on the shelf, so you want every cover in the run to carry it.
Once the leather itself is settled, yield decides your cost. So we check yield before it ships. We sort every Capra Granulosa skin against your cutting specs, and you get a cover count, not just a footage figure.
Smooth Historical Goat
Smooth Historical Goat is a smooth goatskin with a solid reputation among binders, and it is just as dependable for edition work. Clients use it for full editions, limited editions, variant bindings and special copies inside a larger run.
The yield problem is the same, because goatskins differ in shape and usable area. So we check each skin against your specs.
Running both leathers in one project? Let us know, and we will audit them together so you get one yield report and one tagged order.
How the skin-by-skin audit works
For edition clients, we do the yield work before the leather leaves our facility.
- You send your cutting specs. Give us your board dimensions, spine widths and turn-in allowances before we pull a single skin.
- We check every skin. We inspect each hide by hand and map it against your cutting layout. We look at spine direction, stretch, usable area and natural marks.
- You get a verified cover count. Every skin is sorted and tagged with its yield, so you know your total before you make a cut.
The real cost of cheap leather
A low price per square foot only looks cheap until you divide it by the number of covers. The number that counts is the cost per finished cover.
| Standard supplier | Siegel pre-sorted leather | |
|---|---|---|
| Billing | Gross square footage. You absorb the waste and the surprises. | Verified yield. You know your cover count before you cut. |
| Sorting labour | Your team spends hours measuring and planning layouts. | We do the layout and sorting work. |
| Production risk | A shortfall mid-edition stops the line and misses the deadline. | Cover counts are fixed up front, so the line keeps moving. |
| Matching | A re-order means matching colour and grain after the fact. | The whole run is sourced and sorted together. |
What to send us
We need a few figures to pre-sort your leather. If you don’t have all of them yet, send what you have, and we will tell you what is missing.
- Board dimensions (height and width) for each cover size
- Spine width, and whether it varies between volumes
- Turn-in allowance on all edges
- Number of copies, split by leather if you are using both
- Your delivery deadline
Copy 1 and copy 1,000 should match
Colour and grain should look the same from the first book to the last, and the best way to get that is to sort all your skins in one pass, against one spec. It also frees your team to bind books instead of measuring hides.
