Roan
$60.00
Samples — New R&D as of 8/14/26
These are vegetable?tanned sheepskins, 0.6–0.8 mm, undyed, produced upon request for conservation and restoration. Roan is the historical name for this leather, used in many traditionally bound books. Our request came from an established conservator working on U.S. 18th?century volumes.
The tannage is similar in temper to our undyed vegetable?tanned goat. This leather has specific characteristics designed to emulate the appropriate period. It is BIS?free, syntan?free, and aldehyde?free. We employed three vegetable tanning agents: one pyrogallol, for lightfastness and oxidation resistance, and two catechols, for fullness and to impart a biscuit shade.
As these are samples, only a limited number of skins are available. We welcome your feedback should you make a purchase, as it will help guide us in producing better bookbinding leather for you.
