Roma Goat has some unusual characteristics. It is produced from raw skins which are purchased by Steve Siegel, who believes that they are the finest goatskins worldwide. The leather is initially tanned with Tara at its original location. From there , it is shipped to the EU to a tanner/finisher where the leather is re-tanned in Sumac and colored with a very light pigment coat. The leather will pass a dry rub test, but fails a wet rub test. This is made by design. The leather absorbs water easily and can be tooled with gold leaf and albumen. The grain is shrunk, producing a pebbly surface.
The skins average 6-8 ft and are very clean, substance 0.7-0.9 mm.
